Power theft is prevalent in our part of the world, so much so that those involved in such a crime do not consider this to be a crime at all or much worse, they in fact consider it their right, not realizing how risky it can turn out to be. Theft is a crime, in this case, it is done at the expense of potentially losing their own lives while also endangering others around. It all trickles down to the need of inculcating a strong civic sense in the society.
At KE, we have been active in creating awareness regarding not just conserving energy, safe use of electricity, consequences of hooks (kundas), and also inculcating a civic sense for the greater good of the people. With the company’s focus is gearing up more towards customer centricity, we believe in providing affordable energy, accessible to all within our jurisdiction.
Thanks to the perseverance of our teams, we have been able to bring down our T&D losses (often the cause to power theft) to 15.3%. While curbing the issue of power theft is still a work in progress, the areas free of this menace triumphantly continue to receive uninterrupted power.
As a result of the continuous responsibility of KE and the citizens of Karachi the menace of power theft is gradually taking a back seat, though there is still a long way to go. During FY 2022 alone, over 300,000 kg of illegal hooks (Kunda) were removed from the system, and a total of 12,500 Pole Mounted Transformers (PMT) were converted to Aerial Bundled Cables (ABC), with over 200,000 new meters installed through low-cost meter scheme during the year. The ABC cables are kunda resistant and help ensure safety and higher system-efficiencies, thus bringing down the T&D losses. This investment is part of the massive Rs. 474 billion since privatisation for infrastructure upgrade which eventually helped cater to the entire distribution area’s burgeoning energy needs.
KE is focused on serving its customer base right and through the best means possible. In order to help facilitate customers and connect with communities often in recognition of their support, facilitation camps are set up to reach out to them. Be it setting health camps or those aimed at easing bill payments through easy installments, KE is there to connect with people.
The issue of power theft is dangerous and affects those around in the area which these acts are prevalent, thus leading to loadshedding of power. Citizens are therefore urged to report power theft or fraud when they witness it and connect at any of the various KE tough points; such as through a phone call, SMS, or email while we ensure anonymity.
