The KE annual KHI Awards seek to honour and support organisations that are making a significant impact on the city of Karachi, its people, and environment. Learn about the projects KE supported in 2024 here.

Award Categories

The Awards encompass 14 categories that cover a diverse range of areas that impact Karachi. Please select the category that is best aligned with your organisation’s project*.

*Please note that you can only apply for one category per project. However, as an organisation, you can apply for up to two categories for two separate projects.

EDUCATION

Including (but not limited to): street schools or education services for underprivileged communities. For any educational activities related to e-learning, and learning management systems, please apply in the ‘Digital Accessibility’ category.

Primary Healthcare

Primary healthcare includes preventive, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative services. It is often the first point of contact with the healthcare system and aims to provide care that is accessible, community-based, and culturally appropriate. Primary healthcare is crucial for achieving health equity and ensuring that basic health services are available to all.

Secondary Or Tertiary Healthcare

Secondary healthcare provides specialized services through specialists and hospitals, focusing on diagnosing and treating specific illnesses. includes complex interventions like surgery and advanced diagnostics. It complements primary healthcare by addressing conditions beyond its scope.

UPLIFTING COMMUNITIES

Including (but not limited to) projects/initiatives that provide food, reduce challenges and costs for vulnerable segments and communities related to sewage, sanitation, water, systemic inefficiency, and housing related basic standards.

INCLUSION

Including (but not limited to) projects/initiatives that create an impact for marginalized communities, transgenders, and persons with disabilities for the achievement of equality.

LIVELIHOODS AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING

Including (but not limited to) projects/initiatives that promote and offer high-quality vocational training, as well as support the development of networks and career opportunities for the people of Karachi, especially within underprivileged communities.

HERITAGE & CULTURE

Including (but not limited to) projects /initiatives in the area of heritage, arts and culture, libraries, cultural events and open spaces including (but not limited to) smart kiosks, interactive events and experiences, connected museums, digital libraries and intelligent event management. This category also includes traditional restoration of heritage buildings, landmarks, and sites of Karachi.

DIGITAL ACCESSIBILITY AND FINANCIAL INCLUSION

Including (but not limited to) projects/initiatives in the area of digital accessibility as well as financial inclusion including technologies for innovations in services for the public, financial payments, bill payments, internet payments, and other projects focused on underserved communities/ unbanked population. Digital solutions related to education and healthcare would also be considered in this category.

SPORTS

Including (but not limited to) projects/initiatives that promote the development of sports facilities, youth engagement through sports, and support of sports talent in Karachi.

SAFETY (ROAD, FIRE, HOME, PERSONAL)

Including (but not limited to) projects/initiatives for ensuring safety including emergency services such as early warning systems; emergency response systems such as helplines, on-ground teams, and community-based safety watch teams; and women and children safety related awareness drives or initiatives; support for safety of vulnerable communities including women, children, transgenders, social activists, and human rights abuse victims.

SUSTAINABILITY & ENVIRONMENT

Including (but not limited to) projects/initiatives focused on sustainable environmental projects for Karachi, including clean tech and smart innovations.

EMPOWERING WOMEN

Including (but not limited to) projects/initiatives that are specifically designed for empowering women through education, vocational training, psychological support, economic opportunities etc.

SOCIAL SERVICE

Any project/initiative that does not clearly fall into the other categories but has a clear positive impact such as animal welfare, human rights, legal rights etc.

New organisations/social entities with annual budget up to PKR 5 Million

1.Intended for new projects and start up organisations that are at their core working on social or environmental issues, have been formed in the last 12 months. 2.Small social entities with annual budget up to PKR 5 Million and require special consideration.

Organisation’s Requirements:

  1. The Awards are for not-for-profit organisations, social enterprises, or other entities involved in social and environmental impact projects or services in Karachi, Dhabeji and Gharo in Sindh, and Uthal, Vinder and Bela in Balochistan. Social enterprises and other entities need to demonstrate a clear commitment to social impact.
  2. Social or environmental impact needs to be the core mission of the organisation. Entities affiliated with private for-profit organisations (such as CSR or Foundation arms of companies) will not be considered.
  3. The applying organisation’s proposed project shall be within Karachi and/or its adjoining areas within Sindh and Balochistan falling within KE’s service territory.
  4. The applying organisation should not have any outstanding electricity dues or be involved in any dispute or litigation with KE.
  5. The applying organisation should not have any affiliation with any political or religious party.
  6. The applying organisation must not be currently serving or partnering with KE in any commercial business capacity or have any affiliation with KE and/or be employed by KE (with the exception of KHI Awards 2023-2024 winners).
  7. The organisation must be able to provide the following mandatory documents, as required in the applicant form:

    • A High resolution image best portraying the work and impact of your organisation
    • Registration Certificate of your organisation
    • Tax Certificate: NTN/ Tax Exemption*

    • Form A & Form 29 (entities registered with SECP)
    • Board Members Profile (name and designation)
    • Team Lead / Project team names and profiles (50 words)

  2. Projects can be partnerships, funding models and/or projects in affiliation with public entities – but the same must be declared in the form.
  3. The Award can be applied for a new proposed project/initiative duly supported by credentials, as well as an ongoing project/initiative. Such projects/initiatives may include a standalone initiative forming part of a larger project.
  4. Ongoing day to day operations of any applicant entity shall not be eligible for funding under this award.
  5. The project must be relevant to the category it has been applied for.

TIMELINE

NOTE:

Any Administration expenses given in the project budget must have a supporting justification. Such expenses cannot exceed 10% of the total project budget, nor can they include salaries and staff expenses. POC will be responsible for marketing and communication related aspects including but not limited to facilitating the KE team as and where required for the Awards application. Any justified exception to any documentation requirements above for any organisations may be allowed by the jury at the time of assessing the application for Awards.

DISCLAIMER:

KE reserves the right to re-categorise entries, split/redefine categories of Awards and/or refuse entry in the Awards application process at any time. Further, KE reserves the right to accept or reject any or all the nominations/applications for Awards and/or annul the entire process of grant of Awards without assigning any reason whatsoever. KE shall not be liable for any expenses and/or costs incurred by the interested parties/organisations as a result thereof. In no circumstances will KE be liable for any cost, expense, loss, claim or damage arising out or in connection with an applicant/organisation’s participation in this process for grant of Awards, or any subsequent process/documentation in relation thereto. KE shall not be liable for any costs incurred by any applicant/organisation in the preparation and submission of the application for Awards. The submission of an application for Awards does not give rise to any commitment or legal relationship between KE and any applicant/organisation.
